Harpswell Community Garden
Our Purpose
Our group was formed with the initial dual goals to: (1) organize and support a community garden that grows produce for donation to local food pantries and other town organizations addressing food insecurity, and (2) provide community residents and groups with access to garden plots, with rental fees based on ability to pay. The garden helps form a community of friends and neighbors among the gardeners, and extending to those we serve through our donations. The garden is located at Mitchell Field, Town-owned land that formerly served as a Naval Fuel Depot, and is part of the citizen-developed Master Plan for that 120 acre property. Since 2012, volunteers at the garden have worked to repurpose a section of an empty field by digging a well, improving drainage, installing a deer fence, and replenishing the soil. The garden now has 25 individual plots, a large section for growing vegetables for donation, a young orchard with 10 Harpswell Heritage apple trees, a shared herb garden, and perennial crops. It demonstrates stewardship of open lands to the many residents and visitors who visit Mitchell Field for recreation and events, and is a model for community-based development of the rest of the area. By growing for donation, we are able to help address food insecurity, which is a concerning issue in our community. Through our growth, we are also becoming an information and demonstration area for the community on organic gardening, composting, and related matters.
