At the individual level, environmentalism is difficult to incentivize. With the extra time, money, and other costs needed to maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle, many often choose to opt out of participating altogether. According to the EPA, only about a third of eligible waste is actually recycled every year. For regions like Antarctica that are particularly susceptible to the impacts of global warming, AntarcticDAO wants to collectivize individuals’ efforts toward more sustainable habits to preserve these regions and protect our planet. Through a web3-empowered DAO model, AntarcticDAO rewards individuals by measuring their carbon footprint based on their consumption; based on how much they reduce their consumption of gas/heating/driving/etc., we will reward tokens in return for building eco-friendly habits. Individuals can keep track of their progress through our IceBlock NFT, which is linked to how many “chunks” of ice of Antarctica they have successfully preserved through their conservation. By forming a like-minded community and aggregating funds for this cause, AntarcticDAO aims to fund research projects and initiatives that aim to preserve Antarctica’s glaciers for posterity.
