Please provide a brief description of the project for which you seek funding.
Since launching our community initiative in March 2009 Bountiful Brookline has been engaging Brookline residents and our neighbors in many creative, memorable ways to promote our mission of access to fresh local food across the community. This season we became stewards of an urban demonstration garden serving the emergency food pantry, piloted a teen urban agriculture and leadership program, supported the creation of a community garden at a public housing facility and created garden sharing and garden building projects. We will celebrate the fruits (and veggies) of our collective labor at this weekend's Edible Garden Tour and Harvest Party, a compliment to the Spring into Gardening event held in March. We continue to receive recognition throughout the community and beyond for our work, thanks to NEGEF's early support last year and other actions. Now we need to begin to make a concerted effort to address capacity building, to develop our operational framework and position ourselves for the future. This grant request for $2,500 will help fund three internships and enable Bountiful Brookline to focus on key needs of adminstration, development, marketing, communation and programs. Bountiful Brooklne has benefited, to date, from the extensive generosity of individual and corporate cash, goods and in-kind services. These gestures of support, in association with the efforts of the core group, have been invaluable in enabling our initiative to obtain such a high degree of visibility and success. In order for our organization to be positioned to serve the community for the long haul we recognize that certain things must be put into place now. We do not have all the essential human resources or expertise within our core group to be able to develop, manage and carry out this critical work in a timely manner. We are fortunate to have access to interns through career service programs @ local universities. We believe this is a unique opportunity to both bring fresh perspective to our work as well as engage a vital constituency in our community. We have defined these three internship opportunities to most effectively address areas of highest priority. Each of these positions aligns directly with an existing function within the core steering committee and will enable us to respond to goals for organizational sustainability and community engagement as outlined in the draft strategic plan. These actions include creation of a membership program, expanded website, development of online community forums and engagement and improved outreach and programs. We are seeking a total of $2,500 for three internships including funds to extend the Program/Garden internship into the summer. • The Administrative/Development Intern will provide support for day-to-day operations as well as contribute to event planning, grants research and submittals, and creation of a membership program, all projects that are key to the mission of Bountiful Brookline. • The Communications/Marketing Intern will have a key role in the development and management of our online and print communication including website, newsletter and activities associated with the development of BB's brand. • The Program/Garden Intern will assist in coordination of planning and programming for gardens, youth engagement and gardeners opportunities. This position will ideally continue through summer 2011 depending upon funding. We are confident, that this concentration of energy and effort will enable Bountiful Brookline to make a quantum leap in our ability to engage, inspire and support the community. Our goal is to optimize the human resources we have in order to maximize in -the- ground results. This grant, at this time, is critical. We have gained the confidence of the community and are recognized as a vital resource in the community. These funded internships will be a catalyst enabling us to effectively act and react to help others grow as well.

Whom does your group need to make this project happen?
Please explain how your group will engage members from your community in this project.
Bountiful Brookline is about community building and activism. The internet is a major force in both of those arenas, and we want to be there. With a website as described, Bountiful Brookline will make the conversation around local food production more accessible, articulate, and inclusive. Our first major event, Spring into Gardening, attracted over four hundred participants and created opportunities for urban gardeners to connect through workshops and scheduled growers gatherings. This grant will enable us to develop such connections further through a membership program and by supporting community gardeners, schoolyard gardeners, town wide composting and garden sharing as a start. We envision the website as a vital support to all of Bountiful Brookline’s work in our community space and community soil. That in conjunction with annual and seasonal events, public and youth programs, a monthly newsletter and community partnerships inform our approach as we strive to become a valuable community asset.

Please describe what changes will occur in your community and its environment when your group's project is successful.
We want Bountiful Brookline to be front and center around the topic of local fresh food in our community. These internships will enable us to be more effective through better, more consistent means of sharing on the web, a regular monthly newsletter, seasonal programs and workshops. An enhanced website will give Bountiful Brookline access to better data and allow us to provide more consistent social networking, monitoring interest and providing a platform for a community dialogue. We hope to better understand what factors influence participation and engagement. We look forward to a web presence that supports the community as more than just a source of information. By creating and managing online forums around topics such as composting, garden share, and community gardening (to name a few) we hope to facilitate engagement in a way that is manageable for a small, volunteer-based organization. We generally rely on both numbers and qualitative indicators to gauge the impact of our work. We believe that Bountiful Brookline’s success shows in a thriving community garden at a local public housing facility, youth enthusiasm for weeding and composting, new residential garden share partnerships, a child's joy at the first tomato on their vine. That said, the quantifiable indicator of this new project's success will be twofold. First and foremost, more food will be produced here in Brookline, in shared plots, new community gardens, and systemwide schoolyard gardens. With an online presence as proposed, we will have the means to understand what, where, how, and by whom food is being produced in Brookline.

What relevant skills does the group need (but does not currently have access to) to help move the initiative forward?
As we prepare to grow to address the needs of the community and the goals of our intiative we recognize that our skills and expertise do not include some of what is needed to expand our online presence. In addition, this dynamic group cannot maintain a day to day role in facilitating the work that is necessary to propel Bountiful Brookline forward, We are excited by the opportunity to engage interns to support our efforts to creat a membership program, maintain and expand our online presence and undertake the myriad of steps to implement new programs. Once these new initiatives are activated and we are able to reach our capacity, we are confident that we will be able to attract interest in leadership roles as well as short term projects.
What relevant skills do current members of the group have to help move the initiative forward?
Within the Steering Committee a wide range of skills and expertise are represented including; development/fundraising, marketing and public relations, education, community gardening, urban agriculture and non-profit management. This wealth of skills and expertise have served Bountiful Brookline well and will continue to be a vital resource for the organization as we embark upon this new project. We are also blessed to have the active support of a core group of volunteers who have been instrumental in helping to coordinate our garden, public events and other programs implemented over the past year. Other resources we have been able to tap for in-kind services and advice include business and community leaders, community partners and others in the community interested in participating in activities and programs.
