The Institute for Somatic Sound
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to expand who gets to participate fully in community life by exploring how sound, sensory experience, movement, and embodied attention shape our relationships with ourselves, one another, and the environments we inhabit. We are particularly interested in the experiences of people whose ways of sensing, communicating, moving, or participating have historically been treated as deviations from the norm. Our long-term goal is to develop community-rooted practices that strengthen self-agency, belonging, and care while recognizing that people can experience the same environment in profoundly different ways. We believe that meaningful community change begins with listening: to our own bodies, to one another, and to the places we share. We are developing these practices through artistic experimentation, community engagement, and research, while ensuring that people most affected by the questions we are exploring have a meaningful role in shaping the work itself.
