Cafe Morena
Our Purpose
Our name, Café Morena, draws from a term commonly used within Puerto Rican and broader Latinx communities to describe brown and/or tan skin. We intentionally embrace this identity as a celebration of the Indigenous and African ancestry and heritage that are fundamental to Puerto Rican culture and identity.Through sustainably sourced, fair-trade Puerto Rican coffee, our group seeks to honor this heritage through encouraging and supporting the local communities that sustain Puerto Rico’s coffee tradition, which goes back many years. Rumors have it that even the pope drank Puerto Rican coffee! Together, two second-generation Americans; of West African, Puerto Rican, and European descent - choose to emphasize the beauty that has resulted from a harsh history of the transatlantic slave trade, indigenous extinction, and the subsequent resilience of a myriad of culture; which prevailed and turned into something beautiful.Embracing the words of Dinos Christianopoulos - "They tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds."
