Our purpose is to... provide forcibly displaced peoples with a community of support and safety. We are living in a historic moment, where migrant and asylum-seeking communities across the country are enduring unprecedented attacks on their human rights. Our goal is to empower recently arrived program participants with education and work for independent and successful futures. We have provided their initial two months’ rent and food, so they can begin saving. Participants are enrolled in English classes that they attend twice a week, and those who wish to attain their GEDs are able to study for the exam in Spanish with online programming plus volunteer tutoring we provide.All in the program have been affected by the administration’s policy changes. We are trying to support each of them with reliable legal help to best navigate their potential pathways for continued legal status and/or a green card. Meanwhile, we help with filing motions to change venue, address changes, and other, more straightforward documents to keep them right by the law. We support them in finding and paying for medical care and applying for free insurance for the children. We also look for opportunities to uplift their mental and spiritual health, including by attending performances at local theaters and connecting them to volunteer opportunities.
