Our Purpose

Our group’s name, “Ikirezi,” comes from the Kirundi language, directly translating to ‘precious pearl’. Ikirezi uses this word to refer to the unique gifts every child and person contains. At Ikirezi our main goal is to create a space, through activities and after-school programs, that allow each child to explore and discover their ‘Ikirezi’. Our non-profit group wants every child to have a safe community to learn and grow, though Ikirezi focuses on children from multicultural and immigrant families that have come to Maine. Our founder experienced firsthand how moving to an unfamiliar place can be a scary thing. At Ikirezi, we hope to give those new in Maine a place to feel safe, learn, make friends, create community, and celebrate their own culture. Programs include traditional dance classes, group sports, painting, beading, after-school tutoring, debate, and mentor groups.
