The Gifted Crate was created to address the emotional inequities experienced by children and teens involved with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF). Many of these children face trauma, instability, and disrupted support systems that often result in birthdays and holidays being overlooked. These missed moments can reinforce feelings of invisibility and lack of belonging.Our goal is to build a community where children in foster care are affirmed, valued, and supported through meaningful acts of care. By providing personalized birthday and holiday gifts tailored to each child’s identity and interests, we help restore moments of joy, dignity, and recognition. This work is rooted in the belief that celebration is not a luxury, but a critical part of emotional well-being and healthy development.We formed The Gifted Crate to mobilize community members to directly support children impacted by systemic instability. Our work strengthens community connection, promotes equity in access to joyful experiences, and ensures that children in care know they matter. Our long-term vision is to expand this model so every child in DCF care across Massachusetts experiences consistent affirmation, belonging, and support.
