Our Purpose

The Vermont Village School reimagines school as a liberatory space for people of color of all ages. Our mission is to foster the creation of new institutions through an experimental microschool for an equitable and just society where we operate out of abundance and share wealth and resources. We believe in:
  • Interdependence over independence
  • Collectivism over individualism
  • Intergenerational over ageism
  • Togetherness over conformity
  • Indigenous and ancestral wisdom over white supremacy culture
  • Collaboration over competition
  • Abundance over scarcity
  • Fluidity over rigidity
  • Expansiveness over exclusivity
  • Solidarity over division
  • Cooperation over obedience
  • Community of care over capitalism
We run an in-person program for children and villagers of all ages in Brattleboro, Vermont that meets three days a week, year round. Our cohort includes a majority of low-income families, rural families, and neurodivergent children. We are also expanding our capacity to support families of color across the state through virtual support, gatherings, and professional development for educators.Ultimately, we want to build an interdependent village that works together to meet each other’s and community needs. As a mix of mutual aid and school, we fill needs wherever we see them. For example, we created an emergency winter shelter in Brattleboro. What if students were fully aware of their place in history, in the community, and in a lineage of ancestors? What future would become possible for all of us?
