Our Purpose

The Vermont Coalition Against Factory Farms (VCAFF) seeks to combat the proliferation of factory farms in Vermont. We use an intersectional lens to engage in various forms of communal advocacy, outreach and education efforts, and serve as a watchdog group for industry-backed policies and programs. While we engage in a diverse range of work, we have three primary goals for this fiscal year: (1) Farmers operating outside of our industrialized system aren't receiving the support they need. Many farmers in our community qualify for amazing opportunities, but often don’t have the time or resources to even submit an application. VCAFF is developing a team of volunteers who can identify grants and other funding opportunities for farmers in our area and finish the entire application for them– completely free of charge. (2) We plan to run a strong campaign against the state’s “Cow Power Program” which allows methane from factory farms to be part of our state’s “renewable energy portfolio.” This greenwashing further exacerbates our climate crisis, and entrenches industrial pollution into our already struggling energy system. (3) There is a large educational gap regarding the harms associated with factory farms and the role they play in Vermont’s food system. We would like to make this information more accessible, and have already been invited to present on these issues by several other organizations.
