Our Purpose
Our group was born out of the need for greater representation of indigenous worldviews in wildlife policy decisions, rather than the "traditional" representation of animal and environmental issues by predominantly white voices. After years working as part of larger environmental advocacy movements, Vermont Wildlife Patrol was founded in 2022 as the only indigenous-led grassroots wildlife advocacy group in New England. In Vermont we have provided an indigenous perspective based on lived experience to state lawmakers in support of pro-wildlife legislation, documented and reported on controversial hunting and trapping practices, and advocated for the restoration of extirpated native species like the gray wolf and mountain lion. Our goal is to protect imperiled native wildlife and advocate for land and water restoration through a wholistic approach to "wildlife management" that incorporates indigenous wisdom.
