Our Purpose

The Indigenous Landscape Initiative’s (In Land’s) purpose is to advance ecological health, sustainable, healthy food, and connection among people and with the land through involving communities in reviving Indigenous land stewardship practices on land across the region. The Native practices produced beautiful, resilient landscapes and abundant, sustainable food over millennia. Cared for in these ways, the land can provide wildlife habitat and food for people even through fires, droughts, floods, and pest outbreaks associated with climate change. All who live on the land today have a responsibility to learn how to care for the land in the ways that it wants to be cared for, and In Land’s purpose is to bring communities together to care for the land and each other and to recognize the land’s abundance. In Land is developing as a partnership including Native and non-Native individuals and communities. We emphasize food access, diverse community involvement, education, and climate resilience. Our goal is to work on land across the Northeast of a variety of site types (urban, rural, etc.), ecologies, and ownership arrangements to involve communities in caring for the land and to help the land care for us now and in the future.
