VT Goat Co-Op & Incubator Hub
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to bring people of the global majority, queer folx, and accomplices into a mutually beneficial cooperative focused on raising goats for meat and dairy. According to the USDA, only 4% of Black-owned farms are working primarily with small ruminants. Our group is comprised of first-generation farmers; folks who have felt isolated and sometimes discouraged in their desire and ability to work with livestock. Knowledge is often gatekept and resources are born of potentially dangerous networking chances. Based in Central VT & the NEK, the purpose of our co-op is to work with fellow goat producers to bolster nutrition, feed, means of production, market access, shelter, respite for the farmer, LGD training, and veterinary care. Our goal as an incubator hub is to offer increased access to the means of production as related to value-added goat products; this includes knowledge, tools, and technical assistance. We also intend to partner with folks who are goat world adjacent, such as hay farmers, people raising companion goats, and local food distribution organizations. As a way of engaging with our community the co-op hosts transmission arts activities, farm-based skill shares and artist residencies. Our cooperative carries a commitment to off-grid living and moving in older, rustic, perhaps even luddite ways. We’re about sustainability not profitability. This co-op is meant to be defiance in the face of individualism and capitalism.
