Our Purpose
Boston Community Solar Cooperative (BCSC) was established to address the barriers many communities face in accessing solar energy and its financial benefits. The group’s overarching goal is to create a model where solar power is locally owned, ensuring that both the environmental and economic rewards stay within the community. BCSC focuses on making solar energy affordable and accessible to residents, particularly those who have been left out of clean energy transitions, such as low- and middle-income households, communities of color, and environmental justice neighborhoods. Through cooperative ownership, BCSC provides a platform for community members to invest in local solar projects without the high upfront costs typically associated with solar installations. The cooperative also places a strong emphasis on environmental justice, ensuring that the benefits of renewable energy, like lower electricity bills and cleaner air, reach marginalized communities. By pooling resources and creating shared solar systems, BCSC not only allows residents to actively participate in the clean energy economy but also promotes energy independence. The group’s work is grounded in a belief that the transition to renewable energy should be inclusive, equitable, and community-driven. BCSC’s mission is to increase access to solar power and empower local residents with the tools and knowledge to take control of their energy future.
