Our Purpose

Our purpose is to unite and empower people in our hometown of Barrington to fight the climate crisis through the power of education and opportunities to act. Our group's leaders are all in high school, ranging from sophomores to seniors. After organizing efforts in our school such as "environmental weeks" to educate our peers on environmental issues, we realized that they lacked awareness about the severity of climate change. Additionally, our coastal hometown of Barrington will be sensitive to the effects that climate change will bring. Thus, rather than focusing on a broader scale, we wish to first educate Barrington community members about climate change and how to combat it.To spread this education and awareness, we have started several initiatives. We publish a biweekly student-written newsletter (totaling nearly 50 newsletters in mid-September), host monthly events ranging from climate talks led by scientists to beach cleanups, and create and lead community projects, such as our compost drop-off location that has processed over 4000 pounds to date. More information can be found on our website (https://www.beenvironmental.org/). For our work, we have been honored with the national-level President’s Environmental Youth Award and a citation from the state legislature. All of this effort is in aid of our larger vision — turning Barrington into a town that is aware of the climate change crisis and taking steps to locally combat and adapt to it.
