Our Purpose
The current location of the Community Teaching Garden Literacy Project (CTGLP) was previously an eyesore to the community. An old metal barrier wall was a hazard; the land inside of the wall was filled with dense vegetation, diseased trees, and lacked lighting. It discouraged walkability in the neighborhood. The replacement of the wall with new landscaping, including trees and shrubs, completely revitalized the area into a clean, safe enviornment that encouraged walkability. This set the stage for the development of the CTGLP. This initiative was led by the Indian Lake Community Association, Inc. (ILCA, Inc.) with multiple community partners, including the Department of Transportation, Worcester Tree Initiative, TD Bank, and elected local and state officials. The CTGLP will be redesigned to become Worcester's first ADA-compliant Community Garden, utilizing Universal Design concepts to enable all who participate in gardening, education, and social and artistic events to be in a welcoming space, no matter what age or level of ability. The project has an educational component and a soon to be developed community component. The educational beds serve as a living laboratory for all users, particularly school-aged children. The community beds will be for community members who may be food insecure and without access to healthy, nutritious food. The project also provides educational, social, and recreational programs, including acoustic music and poetry evenings.
