In the 2020 Berwick Recreation Plan results of a town-wide survey reported the types of recreation the community was interested in. Gardening was the second most important recreation to walking.  The Town of Berwick decided in 2023 to make creating a community garden a priority since many residents in the downtown area do not have the appropriate space to grow gardens at home.Berwick Community Garden is being built in the heart of Berwick and provides our town with a beautiful urban green space accessible to everyone. The benefits of the community garden fall into three main areas:

• Health: growing nutritious food for personal use or to share with others in the community
• Nature: practicing respect for the town property, water conservation, environmental stewardship, and regenerative and sustainable gardening practices all while creating a beautiful and enjoyable place for fostering community connections
• Life skills: creating an atmosphere of inclusion, cooperation, and accessibility that allows community members a safe place to grow food and learn valuable life skills

The goal of this project is to bring community members from many backgrounds and interests together through healthy recreational activities with a common focus, thereby strengthening our community’s resilience. The garden is a welcoming and inclusive outdoor community space where the focus is on people, sustainable organic gardening, and education about local healthy food choices.
