Our Purpose
Our purpose is to bring together our Mashpee Wampanoag Community around the rematriation of corn or Weeâchumun, our traditional crop that was destroyed during the King Philip's War. By working with and growing the corn together, our ancestral way, we are healing generational trauma linked to the crop, our homelands and our traditions. We have been growing this corn for 3 seasons, last season we brought together over 30 clan mothers, mothers, women, aunts, and children. This was our biggest harvest yet, and our goal is to see the project grow. Maintaining these traditions and sharing it with our future generations keep our culture and ancestral teachings alive. I have brought this group together in honor of my aunt who taught me our traditional growing methods, and another aunt who would bring our young women together and help us develop confidence. The confidence and healing brought by growing our traditional crops is empowering for our community who is facing a housing crisis on our own land. Providing this knowledge and a space to practice our ancestral ways is critical to cultural revitalization and the continuance of our traditions for generations to come.
