Salem Free Public Library- Seed Library
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to keep our Seed Library stocked, as well as expand our garden programming at the library. In February of 2023 year we officially launched the seed library at Salem Free Public Library. The launch went better than expected and our stock of seeds dwindled rapidly. Unfortunately, we are having trouble finding businesses that are willing to donate their leftover seeds. We are also unable to host seed swaps with seeds from local gardeners due to CT state laws.2026 update:The Seed Library continues to be wildly successful and it continues to inspire thoughtful conversations and ideas for future programs. Some future program ideas are: hosting plant based cooking demos so patrons can learn new ways to use their Summer produce, have Native American chef Rachel Sayet teach a program about traditional Mohegan food and food sovereignty (for America 250), Pollinator plant prizes and programs for Summer reading, and food based crafts and storytimes to get kids excited about eating their veggies. The theme of Summer Reading this year is Plant a Seed, READ!, so this grant would help us expand our program offerings for the Summer, as our budget is very small and limiting.
