Our Purpose

We are a small group of 6 neighbors in Milton, MA (Boston) who came together 6 months ago in response to the Town of Milton funding a $2 million field reconstruction and artificial turf installation project at Milton High School. Our neighborhood is economically and demographically diverse and sits 1 mile from Mattapan. The proposed turf abuts conservation land, wetlands, the Pine Tree Brook, and our homes. Research shows that artificial turf poses health and environmental risks from exposure to PFAS and other toxic chemicals, and in our case, loss of open space for pollinators and wildlife. Our 3 goals are: 1. Stop installation of the turf (Milton Conservation Commission), 2. Pass a turf moratorium (Milton Board of Health), and 3. Advocate for organically managed grass instead of turf (Milton Parks Commission). The Parks Commissioners and their contracted engineering firm have one final step prior to construction: apply for permitting approval from the Milton Conservation Commission. This grant application is intended to fund Scott Horsely, a Civil/Water Engineer to review town engineering plans and testify at public permitting hearings on our behalf (he found 4 potential regulatory violations so far). His proposal costs $5,000 to $7,000. We have no budget. Our group is perceived as fringe and overreacting despite our multiple presentations to town boards and commissions. Our voices are small and outnumbered but our cause is just. Thank you.
