Climate Disobedience Center
Our Purpose
The Climate Disobedience Center exists to support a growing community of climate dissidents who take the risk of action, grounded in love, commensurate with the scale and urgency of the crisis. Our current focused work in the New England region is with the No Coal No Gas campaign, which formed in 2019 as a regional coalition of affinity groups, partner organizations, and individuals. Our organization and 350NH/350NH Action provide staff support for the campaign. Climate change and air pollution from the continued burning of fossil fuels affect everyone - but the first and worst impacts are born by people in the Global South, poor folks, Black and Indigenous communities and People of Color. This magnifies existing inequities, and the people least responsible for the climate crisis are the most at risk. Climate change is a justice issue that demands our immediate action. Our campaign goals are to:1) Build unity and community. We seek to help each other weather the storms of this world while creating a microcosm of the world we want to live in.2) Show what is possible. We will not be constrained by “political feasibility.” We commit to taking nonviolent action to show that collective resistance and a Just Transition are both necessary and possible. 3) Shut down the Merrimack Generating Station. We aim to shut down the last coal-fired power plant on the grid in New England.
