Our Purpose

For the last 18 months, BCNS has engaged the community, calling attention to the lack of transparency in the permitting process, and clearly demonstrating that residents do not want more fossil fuels to be burned in Peabody.  Yet, construction of the new 60 MW peaker began in Dec. 2021.  We continue to oppose its construction and are seeking support from Grassroots to expand and deepen our community outreach efforts.    We are committed to continuing to build relationships with EJ communities and facilitating their engagement in the clean energy transition by addressing language barriers, mobility challenges, confusion around technical jargon, and lack of accessibility and transparency around public meetings.  Some of our efforts include: - Our educational materials will feature translation into Spanish & Portuguese- Tabling at local events, i.e. Black Election Day- Collaborating with the Peabody Board of Health on the installation of air quality monitors around the city and sharing that info with residents- Attending every PMLP board meeting and recording for Peabody TV.    With additional support, we will be able to translate our materials into more languages, print more materials for distribution, widely disseminate up-to-date air pollution data, provide transportation to public meetings and planned events for volunteers with limited mobility, and host more in-person gatherings to build community with those newer to the cause.
