Anti-Racism Organizing in Maine (A project of the non-profit Community Change Inc, whose address is listed below)
Our Purpose
Community Change Inc's purpose is to promote racial justice and equity by challenging systemic racism and acting as a catalyst for anti-racist learning and action. Specifically, the Anti-Racism Organizing in Maine (AROM) project's big picture goal is to move folks living in the predominantly white communities of Maine deeper into antiracist action in their local communities and connect them to the wider liberation movement. This group was formed with the realization and analysis that middle class, predominantly white communities, are where power is concentrated. The advantage of whiteness and the wealth of material resources go hand in hand, and explain the heavy investment in these communities. Also, there is a growing critical mass of white suburban folks interested in being part of a movement to build a more equitable world. However, that mass is disconnected, isolated, confused, and often paralyzed. For a movement toward collective liberation to really take off, we need an organized, connected, sustainably activated network of white folks involved. To do this, the AROM project will create a network of coordinated groups and actions throughout the regions of Maine to build the connective tissue and infrastructure needed for systemic change. We understand that this work is necessary in order to build a world where all of us, regardless of our identities and privileges, can thrive.
