Proyecto Agri Cultura
Our Purpose
Proyecto Agri Cultura is a resident-led urban agriculture initiative that will help residents of the Providence neighborhoods of Olneyville, Silver Lake, and Hartford connect to their cultural heritage and build community through growing food.PAC will organize a bilingual agriculture workshop series that will meet twice a month throughout the growing season. It will be open to all neighborhood residents, facilitate discussions about the importance of growing food to people’s cultures, and help participants grow food in their backyards and in community gardens. The planning committee of PAC are former participants of the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council’s Nuevas Voces/New Voices bilingual environmental leadership program. I (Sharad) am the current NV Program Coordinator, and I’m also the main organizer of PAC, although PAC is not an official WRWC program. Last year, the NV participants themselves asked for more opportunities to grow their own food, and I’ve simply connected them to organizations and individuals who have the gardening experience necessary to support a full workshop series. The workshop series will bring in folks who are experienced in growing food in New England climates, and encourage dialogue between presenters and community members about best growing practices, integrating participants' existing knowledge of how to grow food (often in countries such as the DR or Guatemala) with the successful growing practices in New England
