Our Purpose

This group of dedicated volunteer parents and staff at the Bates Elementary School are committed to food security, outdoor learning and habitat propagation.  A large field behind the school now holds a large and active school garden (managed by the same group of parents) and a newly installed outdoor classroom.  We will use this grant to install a native pollinator garden around the outdoor classroom, then a pollinator meadow on the remaining field.  Many of these plants are also edible.  This garden and field will create a beautiful and natural place for our economically, socially and financially diverse population to relax and learn.  The field is also adjacent to an ephemeral stream and arboretum, providing opportunity to expand habitat into a wildlife/pollinator corridor as a future project.  The majority of the plants for this project will come from the Native Plant Trust of MA.
