Our Purpose

Our purpose is to adopt the Community Preservation Act in Westminster, MA. The CPA uses state/town combined funds for:  protecting open space (including bodies of water) and farmland, creating affordable housing, improving recreational opportunities for citizens of all ages and abilities, and preserving historic sites. As part of our efforts, we have: met with many  public office holders and committees in our town to hear their concerns about the issues CPA addresses; gone door to door to inform citizens about the CPA;  held public forums in town buildings;  and gathered signatures for an Initiative Petition in order to place the CPA on the ballot at our next town election. If passed, a committee to develop a CPA plan for the town will be created from members of the Conservation Comm., Planning Bd., Historical Comm., Housing Authority, Parks & Rec, and citizens at large.  Once the CPA is adopted, local property owners will pay a small surcharge on their property tax (with a low income exemption).  This surcharge will then be matched with state funds to fund projects identified as meeting the goals of the town's plan.  Any projects achieving final approval will do so by a town meeting vote.We will post lawn signs, print fliers, and mail them to citizens of our town in order to inform them about the CPA, what it will cost, and dates of Open Forums and the town election.  We want our citizens to have clear evidence prior to voting.
