Our Purpose

Our purpose is to...  create a town-wide native pollinator friendly landscape.  Public and private properties can be a part of it; from a small flower box or curbside strip to a large parcel of land.  Introducing more native plants will attract more pollinators; this in turn, will attract their predators, and so on up the food chain.  There are almost 30 active farms comprising over 800 acres in Glastonbury.  Since more than 35% of our food relies on pollinators, this project will greatly benefit our farmers which will in turn benefit everyone.     This project gives us the opportunity to learn about the importance of our pollinators, and to share this knowledge with our community.  Many insect species are plummeting, in part due to a lack of available native plants.  If we can help spread the word and involve the community in planting more native plants, we will be able to make a difference for the pollinators.Another reason for the dramatic decrease in pollinators is due to pesticides.  In addition to working with the community to plant more native plants in their yards, we are also talking about how harmful pesticides are.  We can't attract pollinators and then poison them.
