Northeastern Orange County Window Dressers
Our Purpose
Climate change has effects throughout the human population and all forms of nature, penetrating every ecosystem. We want to work to right this man-made wrong in a way that mitigates rather than exacerbates economic incongruities. In Vermont one of the major ways to tackle greenhouse gas emissions is through weatherization of our older houses. The WindowDressers program provides a blueprint for creating a local, community-staffed assembly workshop for fabricating insulating window inserts. This represents an economically-inclusive opportunity to address fossil fuel use in home heating. WindowDressers volunteers make foam-sealed, pine-framed interior storm panels that are custom-fitted for every leaky window. Because people living in older houses in Vermont are often low or fixed-income homeowners, it is particularly relevant that there is a mechanism to offer inserts at a reduced price - or free . Customers pay only what they feel they can, with no absolute income test.We see this effort as achieving three goals, it helps us address the climate crisis, to build community awareness through a fun interactive workshop event, and to assist our neighbors in making a simple modification that will warm up their homes. We need more programs like this one. It is Win-Win that the opportunity to work together is an additive and local way to guide Vermont toward carbon reduction goals.
