Minds on Math
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to...start a Math learning/tutoring center for elementary school students in downtown Waterbury, CT. We will be teaching supplemental Math classes to students in small groups (maximum of 6). Paul is a Math teacher with 39 years of experience, and Susan is a career school administrator. We are responding to the educational deficit most keenly experienced by urban students since the closure of schools last year. We have seen the utter inadequacy of remote learning and computer-based programs in meeting our students' educational needs. So all our teaching will be in-person and hands-on. Students will not be learning on a computer. We will use proven materials and methods, and will take the time needed for students to integrate experience and concepts to make sense of the procedures and algorithms which they will need in secondary school and beyond. Our focus will be the acquisition of mastery in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It is the lack of computational fluency which most handicaps our students when they are faced with the complex procedures required for multiple-digit multiplication, division, fractions, and problem-solving.We have classroom space in the John Bale Book Co. in Waterbury. We will begin classes in August, and will offer twice-weekly, one-hour sessions to students at a cost of $10 per student per month.
