Our Purpose

The mission of Foothills Foodworks (FFW) is to improve dignified healthy food access, as well as to support and connect local farmers and community members within the Western Maine Foothills. Beginning as a small project in 2020, FFW has become a reliable source of healthy packaged meals, which are cooked with local ingredients by and for disadvantaged community members. We work cooperatively with seven local-area food pantries in order to distribute our meals to an average of eight-hundred community members in need each month who are already seeking assistance programs at these locations. Reflecting upon how far we've come and our anticipated growth, we have realized it is time to reach toward a new big-picture goal. FFW currently works under our nonprofit fiscal sponsor, Alan Day Community Garden, and we have decided to embark on the process of transitioning to an independent nonprofit for our project called Maine Foodworks. This creation of our own umbrella nonprofit, under which Foothills Foodworks will operate, will support our growth. Our goal is that Maine Foodworks will serve as a structure that will encourage and support new groups to start up projects similar to Foothills Foodworks that serve other areas of Maine. In other words, the 'seed' vision at the root of our creation of Maine Foodworks is the formation of a network of 'foodworks' projects in Maine that can form, grow, and support one another.
