Our Purpose

WindowDressers brings community volunteers of all economic and social situations together to improve the warmth and comfort of interior spaces, lower heating costs, and reduce carbon dioxide pollution by producing low-cost insulating window inserts that function as custom, interior-mounted storm windows. Volunteers in Bennington County have actively sought to connect with individuals for whom these inserts are not just a convenience but a matter of being able to reduce, and thus pay, their heating bills. As a result, our builds have achieved as much as 55% of inserts going, at no cost, to lower income families. In 2019, members of several Bennington County energy committees met WindowDressers (WD) regional program staff at an Energy and Climate  conference and decided over lunch to work together to form two builds in our county. Our county has a high energy burden due to old housing stock and several high-poverty census tracks. Our model of hosting two collaborating Builds, one in Bennington (Southshire) and one in Manchester (Northshire) is unique among WD.  We partner with the Bennington-Rutland Opportunity Council (BROC) to connect interested clients to their weatherization services. Those not eligible for BROC are referred to NeighborWorks and Efficiency Vermont. Our goal is to use the builds as a springboard to connect interested recipients to a broader range of free or low-cost services to educate and decrease the overall energy burden in the county.
