Our Purpose

Our goal is to empower the town of Brooklin to build a vibrant, just food system. This group formed after we saw how much need there was for food security during the Covid-19 crisis, but also by the strength and cooperation that was shown by our community. The Brooklin Youth Corp (BYC) was formed 20+ years ago to provide engagement and employment opportunities for youth. Overtime it evolved to include a community garden space where younger children could also be involved in learning how to grow and sell food at the local farmers market. In the last few years, the elementary school became very involved in the garden as well; providing food for the school's cafeteria. In 2020, due to Covid-19, the BYC was cancelled. In its place, a community garden was formed. In lieu of payment for a plot, gardeners donated some of their crops to the Magic Food Bus (a hunger relief agency) and to the school's backpack program (providing meals to students in need over the summer). Based on the success of the new community garden model, it was decided to grow the program into the Brooklin Food Corps. Our mission for this year is to increase the impact of the community garden's hunger relief activities and to provide a series of food production workshops. The workshops will be taught by volunteers for fellow community members to expand knowledge and excitement for growing food for our community.
