The Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited is a grassroots volunteer nonprofit working to protect and restore the rivers and watersheds of lower Fairfield County. We engage whole communities and partner with a wide range of civic and environmental partners to connect people who care with opportunities to experience and defend the rivers and streams in their own backyard. As a science-based conservation community, our efforts are focused on the following outcome:
- Climate change mitigation through CO2 sequestration by platinging thousands of trees annually and stabilizing streambanks and sediment
- Climate change resiliency through removal of barriers to aquatic organism passage, stormwater runoff reductions and water conservation efforts
- Water quality improvements through habitat restoration and infrastructure improvements
- Monitoring and science efforts to measure impact and improve methodology
We work by recruiting, training and supporting local volunteers to participate in:
- Active community science efforts such as water temperature and quality monitoring
- Focused habitat restoration programs such as trash cleanups, tree plantings and in-stream habitat work
- Broad community awareness building to grow and engage a diverse set of stakeholders
- Experiential youth education programs to connect more young people to opportunities to learn and lead as conservation stewards
- Advocacy for state and local changes to advance our conservation mission.
