Merrimack River Watershed Council
Our Purpose
The Merrimack River Watershed Council (MRWC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works with diverse stakeholders to improve and protect the Merrimack River watershed for all people and wildlife. We accomplish this through education, science, recreation and advocacy. We are the only regional watershed organization advocating for the entire Merrimack, which runs for 117 miles, provides drinking water for over 600,000 residents, and whose watershed is home to 2.5 million residents. At the time of our founding, the river turned green, red, or orange, depending on the color dye that was used in the mills that day. While the dyes are gone, the river still faces threats from stormwater runoff, wastewater and industry effluents and sewage overflows. MRWC is a community-based organization with a dedicated base of volunteers and supporters in communities in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, from the headwaters to the mouth. The MRWC monitoring program, shoreline cleanups and stewardship events on the river’s banks are very rooted in a community need for a healthy river and universal access to clean green space. MRWC has a strong partnership network that leverages resources and relationships to build a strong social and environmental safety net for vulnerable communities in our watershed.
