Our Purpose

We are the full-time staff of PVD Recreation Department (PRD) helping support the city’s underserved youth by serving “Grab and Go” meals to over 550 youth 18 and under. As city workers who were not laid off or furloughed, we showed up Monday-Friday, once schools were closed. We carefully set up the sites by disinfecting tables and marking off spaces 6 feet apart for children to line up to receive meals. Our meal distribution sites are now open bi-weekly; we continue to give out “Grab and Go Meals”, with food for up to 4 days. For our program “Providing for the Providers” (PFTP), we are working with The the Partnership for PVD Parks (P3) to identify and arrange for local businesses to provide weekly meals for us so that each team of 2 or 3 recreation workers at each site can eat together and so that our work feeding food insecure youth throughout PVD can be honored! This will also support local businesses by helping them keep their doors open. P3 piloted this program with us the past four weeks and we all want PFTP to continue every week for as long as the crisis persists! One staff person put it best when he said to P3, “The week was long and the work is hard but looking forward to a meal at the end of it made us all smile.” During Week #2 of “Providing for the Providers”, our local restaurant partner was so excited about the program that he asked to participate for 2 more weeks!
