Penquis Go Green
Our Purpose
Penquis Go Green’s goal is to facilitate a stronger connection between our students and the natural world around them and, more specifically, food sources. The student group was inspired 5 years ago by the strong traditions in outdoor activities, sustenance living in our community, and a concern for the challenges the students will face in an increasingly warming and changing world. A core group of the school staff wanted to develop infrastructure that would allow interaction with the students and the rich ecosystem on school grounds including a plethora of wild animal species and stream, river, field, border, and woodland habitats. Our group has built a nature trail, outdoor classroom, grown a Go Green club and trail crew, built planters and established indoor grow stations in three different classrooms. We now have plans to build an attached greenhouse. This space, with indoor accessibility and heating, will be used for growing produce for the school kitchen year round and as a classroom resource. It will facilitate the school’s efforts to foster a sense of place, self, and community as students work together to grow food, compost waste, and care for and study plants and food cycles. A partnership with the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District Education Outreach Coordinator will help staff develop curricula to maximize use of the greenhouse facilities.
