Our Purpose

Our purpose is to promote collaboration between urban and rural communities on issues that impact all communities, such as hunger, homelessness, climate change, gun violence, mass incarceration, and democracy deterioration. The problem we're working to address is that geographic divides are significant and growing bigger. They're also a proxy for other divisions, such as "reds vs. blues" and contrasting levels of racial, religious, and ethnic diversity. Collectively, these divisions are undermining social cohesion across the United States. And this makes it harder to come together to address issues that impact all communities, such as food injustice and environmental degradation. Our solution is to bring together people in urban and rural areas that sit less than 100 miles from each other for positive interactions to address shared challenges, contributing to the mutually reinforcing goals of improved relationships and ability to tackle local problems. We work at three levels:
  1. Individual empowerment through enhanced collaboration skills
  2. Local action in which communtiy members address social, economic, environmental, and political challenges in urban and rural areas through collective action
  3. National unity through urban and rural relationships across geographic and ideological divisions
