Bellows Falls Community Garden
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to improve and perpetuate an 8600 sq. ft. community garden currently threatened with problems resulting from multiple uses for the same land. Because the town operates a ski slope and rope tow adjacent to the garden, a removable fence was installed on two side of the garden some years ago. The remainder was fenced traditionally. The garden was established in 1995, but, in 2019, for the first time, the Dept. of Public Works asked us to remove the entire fence. We complied, but realized immediately that replacement would be both expensive and physically strenuous. We consulted with town officials, who told us the DPW would erect the fence, but that we need to find funding for materials. A new fence is essential to the recruitment of new gardeners this year (there are a few hundred square feet avaliable that were in cultivation last summer) and to the survival of the garden. Loss of the community garden at this time would be a setback for local efforts to promote health and resiliency by means of mentoring new gardeners, and offering workshops in soil health, composting, and the health and social benefits of community gardening. Bellows Falls has approximately 900 rental units and many homes are built on lots too small to garden. We would like to be in a position to have a waiting list, and need to apply to the town for additional space.
