Our Purpose

South Meadow is a neighborhood of affordable apartments and condos owned by Champlain Housing Trust since 2012.  The community is made up of mostly families--many of them new americans-- who have to stretch their dollar further.  In 2018, Champlain Housing Trust installed 25 raised garden beds.  Since then, we have worked with the Vermont Community Garden Network to design seasonal programming that educates and empowers particpants to grow healthy organic produce that is typically too expensive at the store.  This past season we worked with an Agroecology research group from the University of Vermont to facilitate a"garden design game" in order to get feedback from residents about their gardening experience.  Through this activity we learned that the majority of partcipants bring their children to the garden and that they would like a dedicated space for nature play.  Our goal for next season is to design, build and maintain a childrens play area near the garden to better engage youth and their families in their food system.
