Dawnland Heritage Garden and Seed Library at Sterling College
Our Purpose
The Dawnland Heritage Garden (DHG) began in 2018 at Sterling College in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. This project is a partnership between Seeds of Renewal, Abenaki Helping Abenaki and the Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems at Sterling College. These groups came together to address the erosion of agrobiodiversity that has been accompanied by a loss of cultural and culinary knowledge associated with food and seed varieties native to Dawnland, the traditional Abenaki name for Vermont. DHG is one of only two community gardens projects working rematriate Dawnland seeds in Vermont. Rematriation is an indigenous concept that refers to the “reclaiming of ancestral remains, spirituality, culture, knowledge, and resources, instead of the more Patriarchally associated Repatriation” (Rowen White, Sierra Seeds), seeds in the DHG are all seeds native to Dawnland and important to Abenaki customs and celebrations. In 2018, the DHG’s first year, all crops were given back to Abenaki helping Abenaki and Seeds of Renewal, the seeds were saved to plant in the 2019 season. During the second year of growth, seeds will be incorporated into the Dawnland Heritage Seed Library (DHSL) at Sterling College. The DHSL will be the first seed library in Vermont that specifically highlights the importance of rematriating native seeds in Vermont sharing the stories of Dawnland Seeds.
