Friends of Sister Rose Shelter
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to...bring to life the raised garden beds at the Sister Rose Shelter in order to grow healthy vegetables to be used in preparation of meals for the daily soup kitchen that serves 100+ neighbors and homeless individuals and in the evening for the shelter residents of both Sister Rose (men's) shelter and Grace House (women's shelter). These garden beds will be tilled, soil amended, planted, weeded, watered and harvested by volunteer collaborative groups, the residents of the shelter and neighborhood, and shelter volunteers. The collaboration will include collage students from a local Sustainable Agriculture program, high school students and post high school youth from Groundworks Southcoast, along with farming professionals to use their skills and education to bring life and sustenance to those in need in New Bedford, MA. A seedling give-a-way day will be held for the neighbors to be able to take free seedlings, pots and soil home. to plant and grow their own vegetables. Our hope and plan is to bring farming professionals to share their expertise with the college students who will share their education and experience with high school and post high school students who are working at Groundworks Southcoast and with shelter residents and neighbors. This will lead to healthy modeling for all involved. All this collaboration will lead to FOOD! Healthy food and health education will be the focus.
