Our Purpose

Portland High School Extended Learning Opportunities helps students with career related exploration including supporting students with applying for and getting jobs. In the moment of COVID-19, many students with jobs are currently facing obstacles such as:1. Not being able to work/being laid off due to workplaces closing or reducing hours2. Wanting to not work because of a risk to their own health or the health of the people they live with3. Not being able to work due to being quarantinedMany students, especially those in the country without family rely on their part time jobs for being able to get the essentials such as food. Having this funding would help provide food and other essentials to students who cannot work for any reason. The funding would be prioritized for students who do not have family around. Students deserve to be able to focus on their online school work and not have to worry about getting sick by going to work.Unemployment insurance is a great option, but it may not be accessible to some students due to barriers such as immigration status, lack of access to the internet, or not having a bank account.
