Our Purpose

At Harvest Cycle, we believe compost can heal our atmosphere, our soil, and our communities. Harvest Cycle’s mission is to build and support a community-led compost depot in every neighborhood in Providence. We believe there is an economic justice case to be made for community composting, since food scraps are a valuable resource, and should stay in the neighborhoods where they are produced, rather than being extracted by haulers for profit. Composting helps rebuild fertile soil that is essential for urban agriculture, and when a neighborhood community is involved directly in the collection and processing of compost at a community garden, essential connections are made that boost food security and community resilience. Additionally, food scraps shrink nine times in volume on their way to becoming compost, so processing them in the neighborhoods where they are produced is crucial to building a carbon-neutral (and potentially carbon negative!) organics waste stream. This also allows them to be picked up by bicycle.
