Environmental Justice Awareness Coalition - through Maine People's Alliance
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to combine our collective networks and resources to change the narrative of environmentalism in Maine. Rising energy costs leave low-income people with little recourse during blackouts, heat waves, and other hazards; our Native populations have had their land polluted and stolen, supported by the government. Our goal is for students to use their historical knowledge and modern understanding of key equity frameworks in the movement for justice to raise awareness of the need for targeted environmental interventions in marginalized communities. This is a volunteer group that operates independently but is supported by the larger organization of Maine People's Alliance/Resource Center (est. 1982)-- through the staff capacity of 1 organizer and institutional knowledge, but not through funding for student volunteers. MPA's purpose is to bring individuals and organizations together to realize shared goals. We focus on leadership development to increase the number of community leaders prepared to work for positive social change.
