Pa'lante Restorative Justice
Our Purpose
The mission of the Pa’lante Restorative Justice (RJ) Program at Holyoke High School (HHS) is to build youth power, center student voice, and organize to dismantle the school to prison pipeline in Holyoke and beyond. Pa’lante stands out as perhaps the only school-based RJ program in the country that embodies transformative justice: we focus on both repairing interpersonal harm and conflict, and on transforming underlying social conditions including poverty, racism, and educational inequity. This is critical at HHS, where students of color (nearly 80% of students) face an opportunity gap in graduation rate, discipline rates, honors/AP enrollment, college-access, extracurricular engagement, and performance on standardized tests. In 2013, HPS had the fourth highest suspension rate of Latinx students in the US. Latinxs remain twice as likely to receive in-school suspensions and three times more likely to receive an out-of-school suspension than their white peers. Our mission and values are closely aligned with those of the Grassroots Fund, particularly Change vs. Charity. Pa’lante is a liberatory, life-affirming, youth-led space that seeks to transform oppression in school. This cannot be achieved by working for youth. We work with youth to develop authentic solidarity based on real relationships.
