Our Purpose

Our purpose is to work within communities affected by legacy contamination in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Energy and the Environment. Working with Ct DEEP, a site ready for phyto-remediation is identified and initial contact made with the site owner/property manager. We then engage the public schools, the local gardening groups, environmental groups etc to teach a series of classes on the history, processes and efficacy of phyto-remediation, while introducing students to both environmental challenges in their neighborhood, as well as simple practical ways to correct those problems. Working with the students, we identify the optimal hyper-accumulating plants for the remediation and design a remediation garden that is both beautiful and effective. Students and community members are then invited to join us to plant the garden. We further engage the local community through a booth at local town festivals, working with high school students to talk to visitors and distribute a small gift of remediation (sunflower seeds) to take home with them and plant, now armed with the knowledge that the sunflower is 'more than just a pretty face'. In 2019, we worked with 2 classes at Windsor High School and their Earth Science teacher. The material we developed will be included in futures science classes taught by Ms. Kuzmeskas.
