Slate Quarry Park, 501 (c) (3)
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Slate Quarry Group is to build a park on 76 Main St. Poultney, Vermont. This is the only potential green space available in the center of town and our goal is to preserve it into useful land, with good water drainage, trees and a green grass area. The park will commemorate the slate quarry industry, the employees and owners who have worked the quarries in the Slate Valley for over 180 years. Slate will be used in the construction, and also for monoliths upon which will be carved the history of slate in the area. The park will be used for program events such as dance, music and arts activities, as well as sitting, relaxing and eating lunch. Senior citizens housing is next store, Green Mountain College and Poultney HIgh School are both within close proximity to the park for students to visit it. We will draw members of the Poultney community to the park. We also hope that the nature of the park will attract visitors to downtown Poultney to help bolster our economy. A number of businesses have closed, we want to help revitialize the town by having the slate park become a destination spot.
