Our Purpose

SolaVida was founded 2013 with the mission to draw ‘new constituencies into the crucial push for a deeper and faster response to the challenges of climate change and carbon pollution…The most vulnerable communities on the planet are hit first and hardest. Their voices must no longer be ignored.’Since 2000, measurements from the atmosphere and the oceans have validated decades of warnings from climate scientists. Over the same period, the impacts of climate change on all aspects of society have been widely highlighted by public health and medical experts. As a result, every major medical professional society in the United States has issued statements calling climate change ‘a public health crisis’ (American Medical Association) and stating that ‘climate change is a health emergency’ (The American Public Health Association). Over the last 9 years, two Administrations have worked to obliterate 50 years of environmental advancements. At the same time, we have seen the political shift decimate other long held programs, policies and norms across government in shocking fashion. While this insanity has led to records levels of depression and anxiety across the US (especially among young people), few people see the personal toll that this shift has taken on the big-hearted people who get up every day and fight back. Our goal in this project is to help some of those people find defiant joy.
