FitzGerald School Community Garden
Our Purpose
The FitzGerald School Community Garden group was formed in the Fall of 2015 as a sub group in the FitzGerald PTO. The goal of our group is to revitalize an existing gardening bed in front of our school and connect the classrooms to this outside space. We plan to provide the resources for students, teachers, families, and the community to come together and create an edible garden. We want the students to have an outdoor learning garden where they can get their hands dirty, understand where food comes from, and delight in the joy of growing food. In recent years, our school has become overcrowded. Many of the specialist rooms have been taken away, so students are sitting in the same classroom for music, art, and drama. We feel a school garden would give an outdoor learning space for the kinesthetic learners. We have consulted with the school principal and have the school administration support to begin to rejuvenate the garden space. Our group also plans on supporting the garden through volunteers. At first two PTO meetings, we spoke and started a volunteer sign up in which we have 20 names. For the summer months, we are planning on having two families sign up for each week to water, weed, and harvest. We have spoken to the Waltham Recreation Department that hosts elementary level summer camps at our school about incorporating gardening into their summer curriculum. In addition, a local Girl Scout troop has expressed interest in helping with weeding and harvesting projects over the summer. Our community partner, Healthy Waltham, is providing ongoing volunteers for garden maintenance.
