Our Purpose

WaYS is a model educational program to enhance Native American student persistence in science.  Research has shown that one key component to persistence in sciences for Native American students is the melding of the science AND culture into the curriculum.  In Maine, the rich cultural heritage of the Wabanaki Tribes and their relationship to the environment lends itself well to this kind of curriculum.  Another key element in education persistence for Native American students is to connect the next generation to continue their cultural heritage and legacy of environmental management. WaYS is a long-term program to engage Wabanaki students through their cultural heritage and environmental legacy to encourage and promote persistence in life sciences through college and into a career. This model program has a three-pronged approach.  The multi-prong approach includes a week-long summer camp; internships pairing cultural resource professionals and natural resource professionals; TEK programs at each teen center/Boys & Girls Club for each Tribe
